What You Need To Know This Week

Seaport Square planning is nearing completion. Make sure it is adding what you want to the neighborhood by attending tonight's (12/5) public meeting. The City is working on a permanent outdoor dining program and wants your feedback Monday (12/5) or Tuesday (12/6) night. On Wednesday night (12/7), there is a community meeting for another Life Sciences building project in Fort Point's historic district. The Fort Point Channel Landmark District Commission is holding their December meeting Thursday (12/8) night. If you are a Fort Point resident or business property owner who is interested in serving as a Fort Point Landmark Commissioner, please contact FPNA.

December 5: The Boston Planning & Development  Agency (BPDA) is hosting a Seaport Square Public Meeting at 6pm to discuss Notice of Project Change (NPC) and amendments to the Planned Development Area (PDA) including project impacts and mitigation. Attend to find out what remains to be be built and give feedback on what is needed to create a complete neighborhood. Will it be climate resilient, reduce urban heat and protect the neighborhood from flooding? Will it include civic, cultural spaces? A park? Affordable Housing? Did you know Artists For Humanity recently expanded their EpiCenter? This Wednesday, January 30 from 5 pm - 7 pm, Artists For Humanity invites you to their first Open Studios of 2019.  Tour bustling studios, meet inspiring teens, preview the latest projects, network with local creatives, and mingle over wine and cheese. The event is free, family-friendly, and open to the public. Artist For Humanity is located at 100 West 2nd Street next to the A Street Park and just blocks away from the Broadway red line T station.

Start February with the Fort Point Arts Community (FPAC) opening reception of Melt , a reinterpretation of Nordic myths — with feminist and science fiction twists through video, photography and sculpture by artists Isabel Beavers and Laine Rettmer. The artists created Melt during a residency in Iceland. The opening reception is Friday, February 1st from 6 pm - 8 pm at FPAC Gallery, 300 Summer Street. More details.

The Loop, an interactive art experience, has landed at One Seaport Square (between Showcase Icon and Scorpian). Take a seat in these giant circular structures, pump the handlebar, and watch a story unfold. The installation will be around until February 17, 2019. More details.

On Sunday, February 10th at 2 pm, the Fort Point Theatre Channel presents Her Story Is Translated: Perspectives on Poetry, Playwriting, and Music in Arabic and English coordinated by Jennifer Jean and Amy Merrill. Her Story Is continues with this special event highlighting the process of “translation” in the poetry, plays, and music between and among several artists living in Iraq and in the United States. The free event will take place in Art Under The Stairs at Midway Artist Studios located at 15 Channel Center Street. To learn more about Her Story Is visit the Fort Point Theatre Channel.

Last week (9/12/17) WS Development, who in 2015 purchased the remaining 12.5 acres of Seaport Square, filed a Supplemental Information Report (SIR) to their Notice of Project Change submitted seven months prior. The filing responds to the many public comments submitted from Boston residents, performing art organizations and others including the Boston Planning & Development Agency (BPDA) and Boston Parks & Recreation Department. WS Development also filed an amendment to Seaport Square Planned Development Area 78  three days later.

Two of the largest calls came in response to the jettisoning of a 200,000 sf arts center and the elimination of Seaport Hill Park.

Seaport Square IAG Public Meeting

The Boston Planning & Development  Agency (formerly BRA) will be holding an Impact Advisory Group (IAG) Public Meeting regarding Seaport Square on:

The remaining 13 acres of the 23 acre Seaport Square is being proposed as a 7,680,010 Million square feet of development consisting of 3.2 million residential, 2.8 million of new office, 476,800 square feet of hotel, a cultural and educational center and 1.12 million square feet of multi-level retail, restaurant and entertainment.

The public is welcome to attend. The purpose of this meeting is a little different than that of a traditional community meeting. As part of the development review process, IAG members work closely with BPDA staff to identify the impacts of a project and recommend appropriate community benefits to offset those impacts. IAG meetings prioritize discussion between the project proponent (i.e. the developer) and IAG members. If time remains at the end of the meeting, BPDA staff will open the floor to other community members in attendance. 

The BPDA held two community public meetings on Feb 16th and Feb 27th focused primarily on proposed Seaport Square master plan changes to the public realm and open space, and the arts and cultural space leaving many more aspects such as additional millions in square footage (massing) to be addressed at future meetings such as this one. View Seaport Square presentation at March 7th Boston Civic and Design Commission.

Seaport Square is approximately a total of 23 acres of land, defined by an L-shaped series of development blocks and generally bounded by Northern Avenue and Seaport Boulevard (between Old Sleeper Street and Pier 4 Boulevard) and by Stillings Street, Boston Wharf Road, East Service Road and Pier 4 Boulevard and B Street (between Seaport Boulevard and Summer Street).

*Comments made at the earlier February 16th public meeting maybe incorporated or responded to at the February 27th meeting. The first community meeting focused primarily on the public realm (open space) with some discussion of arts, cultural and civic uses and transportation. The proponent, Boston Seaport M1&2 Land, LLC, proposes to construct an approximately 1,012,000 gross square foot mixed-use development containing approximately 735 residences, approximately 125,000 square feet of retail/commercial space and a below-grade garage containing approximately 560 lined parking,

Project Description: In response to the comments raised during the Project Notification Form phase of review the Proponent submitted a Draft Project Impact Report on November 30, 2009, showing development on twenty-three (23) acres of vacant parking lots in South Boston, which are generally bounded by Northern Avenue, Seaport Boulevard, Congress Street and Summer Street, in the South Boston Waterfront known as “Seaport Square”. The proposed project contemplates approximately twenty-three (23) buildings on twenty (20) city blocks with a total of approximately 6.5 million square feet of development in a mixed-use project that will include approximately 2.8 million square feet of residential, approximately 1.3 million square feet of office and research, approximately 1.3 million square feet of retail and entertainment uses, approximately 600,000 square feet of education and cultural space, approximately 500,000 square feet of hotel space, as well Boston as below-grade parking garages that will accommodate approximately 6,500 cars. The Redevelopment Proposed Project will also include a 1.25 acre “Seaport Square Green” and a 0.75 acre “Seaport Hill” as well as other open spaces throughout the proposed project.

Barking Crab Not Being Moved for Seaport Square

A rebuilt Barking Crab will not be part of Seaport Square, a sweeping
proposal for millions of square feet of new development near South
Boston¹s waterfront.

Hub developer John Hynes, who officially filed his Seaport Square
proposal yesterday at City Hall, confirmed he has dropped his efforts
to lure the harborside seafood eatery into his project.

The proposal failed to win over the eatery¹s owners, who have opted to
stay in their rustic and colorful perch right on the waterfront.

³The Barking Crab is in a very unique location there,² said George
Regan, the restaurant¹s spokesman. ³There is only so much waterfront
in this city.²

Undaunted, Hynes said he¹s now pushing ahead with plans for what would
be the largest new development project in Boston history.

The $3.5 billion project would transform 23 acres of surface parking
lots across from the J. Joseph Moakley U.S. Courthouse into a new
neighborhood of 5,000 residents.

Hynes wants to start work later this year on a first phase of two
smaller residential buildings totaling 110 units, with 46,000 square
feet of shops and retail on the first two floors. There are also plans
to move and rebuild the Our Lady of Good Voyage Chapel on a nearby site.

³Not since the filling of the Back Bay has Boston had an opportuntiy
to create a new neighborhood,² Hynes¹ development team claims in plans
filed with the Boston Redevelopment Authority. ³Seaport Square in
South Boston will be Boston¹s first 21st century neighborhood.²

Hynes hopes to start work on the project¹s second phase in 2010.

That includes most of Seaport Square¹s 2,500 residential units, 1.4
million square feet of office and lab space, 1.25 million square feet
of retail, and a 700-room hotel.

There are also plans for a pair of schools for 2,000 students - a
public, pre-K early learning center for 200 students and a private
school for another 1,800 children.
