BRA Approves 23 Residential Units for Purchase on A Street

On June 19, 2014 the Boston Redevelopment Authority (BRA) approved the redevelopment of 39 A Street at Silver Street (between W. Broadway and W. Fourth Streets) in South Boston. The project will replace a single-story building with a five-story residential building.

39 A Street will create 23 home ownership units, three of which will be affordable. The project will include 30 parking spaces on the ground floor level of the project and bicycle storage space for residents. As a public benefit, the developer will widen the public sidewalks along A and Silver Streets and plant new street trees.

 The project developer is East Way Development, LLC and Tim Johnson Architect, LLC is the project architect. Construction is planned to begin in the fall of 2014.

As reported in an earlier post, the BRA held a community meeting on the project on April 22nd.

Traffic and Parking Advisory Saturday at BCEC

The Boston Police Promotional Examination and the Probation Officers Exam are both taking place at the BCEC on Saturday, June 28, 2014 from 9 am - noon. About 3,000 total attendees and are expected to come in all at once. The MCCA Transportation Department is preparing for heavy traffic congestion at the start and break of both events.

It is anticipated that overflow parking will be needed for these two exams and maps will be distributed to test takers who wish to go directly to overflow so as to avoid traffic congestion at the BCEC. The following parking garages will be used for overflow parking:

• Channel Center Garage
• Necco Street Garage (as a secondary alternative)

A complimentary shuttle will also transport attendees between the offsite garage(s) and the BCEC.

As both of these exams are all in events, the MCCA Transportation Department foresees the possibility of attendees coming all at once and/or last minute attendees attempting to park at no parking areas. Police details will therefore have to be hired to manage the traffic and catch any parking violators. In addition to the South Boston police detail, Massachusetts State police will also be on hand at South Boston Bypass Rd & Cyprus from 6 am - 2 pm.

Boston's First Citywide Community Yard Sale

Never finished your spring cleaning? Don't worry. The City of Boston's first citywide community yard sale will take place on Saturday, June 28 and Sunday, June 29th. The event, organized by Greenovate Boston, seeks to promote the reuse and recycling of goods, and reduce the amount of bulk waste sent to the curb.

Residents can participate by hosting a yard sale on June 28 or 29, and registering it onlineVia the website, shoppers will be able to see a map of all the yard sales being held that weekend across the city, and preview items for sale. The website application also provides resources to help residents recycle and donate any unsold items.

Other steps to reduce solid waste and bolster recycling in Boston include:

• Downtown neighborhoods will increase recycling days from once a week to twice a week, and reduce weekly trash pickup from three times a week to twice a week starting July 1;
• The city's leaf and yard waste collection program has been expanded into the summer;
• Greenovate Boston will launch a reusable water bottle campaign this summer.

Greenovate Boston is a program of the Mayor's Office and is a collective movement to ensure a greener, healthier and more prosperous future by helping Boston reach its goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 25 percent by 2020 and 80 percent by 2050. Greenovate Boston hosted Boston's Climate Change Community Summit on May 28, 2014.
