April 5 - April 11Traffic Advisory: Congress St. Closure & Temporary Lane Restriction & I-90 Closure at Exit 135

Updated 4/9/24: Exit 135 Turnpike off-ramp from I-90 West to South Boston will be closed overnight through Thursday, April 11 with a detour via I-93 North, Purchase Street, and Congress Street.

The Seaport TMA advises that starting Friday 4/5 at 7 a.m. through Monday 4/8 at 5 a.m., there will be work on the roadway at the off-ramp (Ramp F) to Congress Street from I-90 westbound. The right turn from Ramp F will be closed, along with a portion of Congress Street. This lane restriction is required for safety and construction staging as part of the demobilization of the tower crane at the 10 World Trade air rights project.

From I-90 West: At Exit 135 (old Exit 25), the right turn lane from the off-ramp (Ramp F) from I-90 West to Congress Street will be closed, with a detour via B Street and D Street.

From Congress Street East: Congress Street eastbound will be closed between B Street and D Street, with a detour via B Street and Seaport Boulevard. Access will be limited to residents only between Seaport Lane and D Street.

From Congress Street West: Congress Street westbound will be closed between B Street and D Street, with a detour via D Street and Seaport Boulevard. Access will be limited to residents only between Seaport Lane and D Street. Please note that one westbound lane will be open on Friday, April 5 from 7a.m. to 7 p.m.

Detour Timing: 7 a.m. on Friday, April 5, to 5 a.m. on Monday, April 8.

Street Sweeping Returns April Through November

 April marks the start of the street cleaning season through November 30th.

The cleaning of Binford Street from A Street to the Channel occurs from 9 am until 1 pm. The odd side of the street (closest to Gillette) will be cleaned on the first and third Tuesdays of the month starting April 2, 2024. The even side (next to the Channelside parking lot) will be cleaned on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month starting April 9th.

The street sweepers will also tackle A Street from Binford to Congress on the 1st & 3d Tuesdays beginning April 2, 2024 from 9 am until 1 pm. 

They will cross over to even side of A Street from Melcher to Congress every 2nd & 4th Tuesday commencing April 11th from 9 am until 1 pm. 

Everyday street cleaning occurs on Congress St (Dorchester Ave to E. Service Rd ), Summer St and Sleeper St from 12:01 am until 7:00 am.

Don't Be Alarmed. Filming on Congress & on A St. Monday, August 29th

A movie will be filming on Congress Street and on A Street Monday, August 29th. It will involve the use of emergency vehicles so please don’t be alarmed.

T Street Productions (Knives Out) is currently in production on a new film currently going by the name Untitled Novelist Project. The film is written and directed by Cord Jefferson (Watchmen, The Good Place) and stars Jeffrey Wright (The Batman, Westworld, Angels In America). The movie follows the story of a struggling novelist who finds unexpected success while a brief trip to Boston becomes extended due to a series of family related issues.

Filming will take place at an area business on the corner of Congress St and A St on:

Monday, August 29th, 2022 from 7am – 7pm

The scene will involve emergency vehicles driving from Congress St to A St. They will not be stopping or detouring traffic but we do want to make sure neighbors are aware that this is not a real emergency event. BPD should be on site to sort out any confusion among first responders should there be a real emergency.

All of the crew cars will be staged off site at a private parking lot. They will be permitting parking for filming and to stage essential equipment trucks at:

• Congress St metered parking between Sleeper St and Thomson Pl
• A St resident parking between Congress St and Necco St 
• A St metered parking between Melcher St and Necco St
• D St metered parking between Claflin St and New Cypher St

T Street Productions are working closely with the City of Boston and the Mass Film Commission to reduce their impact on the neighborhood. To this end, parking passes will be available for neighbors at the Channel Center Garage if needed. MassDOT Sidewalk Improvements Starts Tuesday

MassDOT is repairing sidewalks, crosswalks, and pedestrian ramps previously constructed under the CA/T Project (Big Dig) along A Street, Boston Wharf Road and Congress Street in advance of turning over these assets to the City Of Boston. There will be street parking restrictions.

Project Scope
A Street: from Iron St. to Melcher St. 
Boston Wharf Rd:  Easterly side only. 
Congress St: from Boston Wharf/West Service Rd to 1-90 ramp.

Starting Tuesday, June 9, 2020, sidewalk and curb repair preparation will begin on A Street starting at Iron Street. Sidewalks closures will occur from Richards Street to the Summer Street underpass as the project advances. The work will be performed in three phases and street parking will be impacted. The pedestrian sidewalk path will be diverted around the work zones and access to the buildings with front doors on A Street will be coordinated by the on-site construction team. There will be a temporary pedestrian pathway created in the bike/parking lane after hours. Pedestrian channeling devices and cones will be used to create this walkway. In addition, trees will be protected and missing / dead trees will be replaced. The work is estimated to complete in 30 days.

Work Hours with Crew on Site: 7:00 am to 3:30 pm.
There maybe short periods of time during trench excavations where the side road will require a temporary closure and detour. All detours will be removed and all side roads opened by 3 pm each day.

All residential & commercial abutters to sidewalk reconstruction work zones will receive notices & no parking signs posted (72) hours prior to any work commencing.

Sweeping Changes to A Street

The Boston Public Works Department is implementing a new street sweeping program in the Fort Point neighborhood.  Currently, many cars do not move on the scheduled A Street  sweeping day and the mechanical sweeper cannot access the gutter area. This program will allow for more effective street sweeping, resulting in a cleaner environment in your community. 

Street cleaning for A Street will switch from Friday afternoons to Tuesdays from 9 am to 1 pm

• A Street from Binford to Congress the 1st & 3d Tuesdays
• A Street from Melcher to Congress the 2nd & 4th Tuesdays

Street cleaning for Binford Street remains Tuesdays from 9 am to 1 pm.

• The odd side of the street (closest to Gillette) the 1st and 3d Tuesdays 
• The even side will be cleaned on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays

The program and enforcement (fines and towing) will begin the week of April 1 and run through November 30th.

Please note that everyday street cleaning from 12:01 am - 7 am continues on Congress Street from Dorchester Ave to E. Service Road and on Sleeper Street.

The odd side of the street (closest to Gillette) will be cleaned on the first and third Tuesdays of the month starting April 4, 2017, and the even side will be cleaned on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month starting April 11th. 

The street sweepers will tackle A Street on Fridays from 1 pm - 5 pm. Starting April 7th with the odd side of A St (Binford to Congress) on the first and third Fridays of the month and then crossing to the even side of A St (Melcher to Congress) on the second and fourth Fridays of the month beginning April 14th.  

Street cleaning on Congress St from Dorchester Ave to E. Service Rd is everyday from 12;01 am - 7:00 am.

Street sweeping on Sleeper St is everyday from 12;01 am - 7:00 am.

Friends of Fort Point Channel Launch Fort Point Banners

The Friends of Fort Point Channel announced that on Thursday, June 11, twenty new custom banners promoting all aspects of Fort Point will be installed along Summer Street, Melcher Street, Congress Street & A Street. The banners are the parts of the Fort Point Community Driven Branding Process to preserve and celebrate the sense of place that is Fort Point neighborhood. 

Please note that:

• Ladders and buckets may be on the streets and under the walls during day of the banners’ installation, starting at 7pm on Wednesday, June 10th.
• A police detail will direct traffic and reduce the impact of the installation to the neighborhood

These banners were conceived and designed with input from the community and contain a font that is native to Fort Point and icons that represent the different aspects of what makes Fort Point special, including the arts, technology, the restaurants and the history of the Fort Point Channel itself. The banners were designed by Fort Point's Stoltze Design. 

Fort Point contains approximately 1,300 area businesses, 33,000 area workforce and 1,900 area residents that will directly benefit from the increased visibility and community pride that will occur due to the branding process. In addition, approximately 3.4 million people visit the South Boston Waterfront area for tourism, making the branding essential for luring more people into the area to explore all the great restaurants, museums and other destinations of Fort Point.

New Parking Meter Time Limits on Summer & Congress Streets

Effective Monday, November 17, 2014 parking meter maximum time limits will change for meters located on specific blocks of Congress and Summer Streets. There will be a four hour maximum for meter parking from the 350 Summer Street block through 425 Summer Street block (Westin Waterfront). Meters on the 250 Summer Street block (near Summer St. bridge) and on the 300 Congress Street block (near the Artist Building) will change to a two hour maximum parking period. Metered parking remains at $1.25/hour. 

The parking policy changes stemmed from data collected from the smart parking system installed December 2014. Information collected from Seaport Boulevard, Congress St., Boston Wharf Rd and Summer St. led to adjusting the parking meters on Summer and Congress to manage parking demand. According to the Boston Transportation Department (BTD), these changes will:

• align parking better for true utilization
• spur higher turnover of on-street parking
• help promote parking availability in the neighborhood

If you need to run an errand in the neighborhood, Parker is a smartphone app that can you in finding a parking space. The app provides available parking real time and hand's free directions, along with meter duration. Local businesses can embed ParkerMap on their website to show customers nearby parking options.
