Fort Point Is Alive With Art, Festivities & Dragon Boats

The FPAC Art Space invites you to experience FLOAT, a group exhibition featuring works by Adria Arch, Cicely Carew, Carly Glovinski, Jo Lobdell, and Eva Lundsager, curated by Robin Hauck.

The Opening Reception is July 29th from 6pm to 8pm at 70A Sleeper Street (across from the Barking Crab) 

Inspired by Mary Oliver's poem The Ponds, FLOAT offers a vibrant sanctuary from the weight of everyday life—inviting visitors to pause, reflect, and embrace a sense of wonder as summer transitions into fall. The exhibition runs through August 22, 2026. 

Discover Distillations, a juried exhibition of FPAC member artists exploring the art of refinement, distilling experience, memory, and observation into their most essential forms. 

On view at The Gallery at Atlantic Wharf now through September 25, 2026 with an Opening Reception on July 30th from 5pm to 7pm.

On Saturday, August 1st both sides of the Channel on land and water will be alive with art, games and dragon boats. 

Ohana New England presents Beasts from the East Dragon Boat Classic and free Fort Point Festival from 8am to 5pm at 15 Necco Street. Whether you’re racing or spectating, Beasts from the East Classic races bring an unforgettable moment of sport, culture and celebration to Boston and local waters.

Atlantic Wharf is hosting their annual Summer Bash, a free family-friendly celebration featuring live entertainment, waterfront activities, creative experiences, and more, from 10am to 12pm on Waterfront Plaza. Taking place along Boston’s scenic waterfront, this celebration brings together local organizations and activities for visitors of all ages.

The Midway Gallery invites you to the opening of "Touches of Gray: Portrait Studies in Graphite". Be the first to experience a curated selection of portraits drawn from live sessions, capturing the character and individuality of each model through the expressive simplicity of graphite by artist Raymond MacDonald. 

The Opening Reception is August 1st from 3pm to 6pm in the Project Room within Midway Gallery at Midway Artist Studios, 15 Channel Center St.  

The exhibition is on view August 1, 2026 through September 29, 2026.

The Distillery Gallery presents Organs Studios: Viscera Nuda, an immersive exhibition by the eight artists of the Boston-based collective Organs Studios. Using projection, light, sound, performance, large-scale sculpture, and interactive installations, the exhibition transforms the gallery into a journey through the inner workings of a living system. The Opening Reception is August 1st from 7pm to 10pm. The Distillery Gallery is located at 516 East 2nd St.  

The Boston Children’s Museum CreatedBy Festival, offering family focused STEAM activities celebrating making, creativity, and self-expression, takes place this Sunday, August 2nd  from 10am to 3pm. The Festival is free with museum admission. Advance online tickets are encouraged.

Creating A Waterfront For All: Fort Point Channel Watersheet Activation Grants Available

Bolstering the Wu Administration's ongoing work to create a waterfront that is accessible to all, the Boston Planning & Development Agency (BPDA) and the Fort Point Channel Operations Board are accepting applications for the 2022 Fort Point Channel Watersheet Activation Grant Program. The application can be downloaded from the BPDA website.

Now in its 11th year, the program provides financial resources for capital improvements and public programming within and along the Fort Point Channel, as envisioned in the Fort Point Channel Watersheet Activation Plan. The plan was established in 2002 through a collaborative effort between the BPDA, City of Boston, landowners, nonprofit and cultural leaders, and residents to encourage new cultural activities and year-round programming in Fort Point.
 
Approximately $50,000 is available to organizations for the 2022 grant cycle. The competitive grant seeks creative proposals for water-based programming in and around Fort Point that will benefit the general public, including such things as new water-based infrastructure, public events, art installations, and educational opportunities.
 
To be eligible, an organization must be tax-exempt or operate under the fiscal sponsorship of a tax-exempt nonprofit. For-profit organizations may be eligible for funding at the discretion of the Fort Point Channel Operations Board if the project constitutes a not-for-profit, public project.
 
Applications are due on Friday, June 3, 2022 at 5 P.M. Funding for the grants stems from the Chapter 91 Waterways Regulations License for Atlantic Wharf, a project developed by Boston Properties.

What Is The Resilient Fort Point Channel Infrastructure Project?

updated 02/14/22 with February 22nd comment deadline and supplemental information. 

A Resilient Fort Point Channel Infrastructure Project Environmental Notification Form (ENF) has been submitted on behalf of the City of Boston and Boston Planning and Development Agency (BPDA) for the construction of:

• a  2,090 linear foot (lf) mixed berm and floodwall mitigation structure with 14 outfall backflow prevention flap gates along a portion of the Fort Point Channel’s southeast shoreline between approximately 15 Necco Street and Dorchester Avenue. 
• the installation of three interim flood protection barriers across the western end of Necco Court, A Street under the Summer Street overpass, and West Service Road under the Summer Street overpass.

The purpose of the project is to reduce flood damage and provide protection to nearby populations, infrastructure, utilities, and structures in the 100 Acres Master Planning Area, which is bounded by the Fort Point Channel to the west, Summer Street to the north, the South Boston Bypass Road/Haul Road to the east, and West Second Street to the south, and portions of South Boston.  The project was also discussed at the FPNA Neighborhood Gathering Kickoff on January 25th by Joe Christo, Senior Resilience and Waterfront Planner, BPDA Climate Change and Environmental Planning. The project will permanently impact 760 lf of Coastal Bank and 68,887 sf of Land Subject to Coastal Storm Flowage (LSCSF) and temporarily impact 60,273 sf of LSCSF.  The project will involves removal of 1.3 acres of impervious area.

The project requires the submission of an ENF pursuant to 301 CMR 11.03(3)(b)(1)(a) and 11.03(3)(b)(1)(f) because it requires a State Agency Action and involves the alteration of Coastal Bank and greater than ½  or more acres of any other wetlands. 

The project requires:

• a Chapter 91 (c. 91) License from the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP)
• an Order of Conditions from the Boston Conservation Commission, or in the case of an appeal, a Superseding Order of Conditions from MassDEP.

The project is receiving a Pre-Disaster Mitigation Grant for $10,000,000 from the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) via the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

Comments will be welcome in writing until February 22, 2022 (new date) and may be submitted via email to Erin Flaherty, Environmental Analyst, Massachusetts Environmental Policy Act Office

A Certificate on the ENF will be issued on February 25, 2022 (need revised date).  Deadlines may be extended.  Please check the New Environmental Monitor for up to date comment period deadlines.

The Plan also endeavors to seamlessly balance these public uses with the existing water-dependent uses along the Channel, including the Gillette Company, Barking Crab and Hook Lobster, as well as advancing water transportation initiatives. 

The activation goals and elements of the Plan have informed Municipal Harbor Plans specific to the area as well as state Chapter 91 Waterways licensing of projects along the Channel. The Fort Point Channel Watersheet Activation Plan is an important part of the ongoing development plans and permitting of 15 Necco, 244-284 A Street and Hook Wharf (James Hook).

Fort Point Channel Watersheet Activation Grantees Announced

The Boston Planning & Development Agency (BPDA), a member of the Fort Point Channel Operations Board (FPCOB), awarded four grants totaling over $50,000 to art, education and community organizations with plans for activating the Fort Point Channel watersheet for the 2020 season.

Grant applicants were asked to submit creative proposals for water-based programming in and around Fort Point that will benefit the general public, including such things as public events, art installations, and educational opportunities.

The four grantees are proven non-profit organizations that have successfully delivered waterfront activation programs in the past. They fulfill many of the grant criteria, including equity and inclusion by introducing Boston students to the beauty of our waterfront, year-round activation through public programming and art installations and activation of the watersheet itself through boat programs.

The grant program builds on the goals of the Fort Point Watersheet Activation Plan, a BPDA planning process that involved local residents, business owners and stakeholders to create a vision for Fort Point channel as a location for public activation and use. The Fort Point Channel Watersheet Activation Grant Program is funded by the Chapter 91 Waterways Regulations License for Atlantic Wharf, developed by Boston Properties.

2020 Winning Projects

Fort Point Arts Community 2020 Floating Public Art Series

Applicant: Fort Point Arts Community (FPAC)
Award: $16,000

Building on the successful growth of FPAC’s Floating Art Program, this funding will bring two new and engaging temporary floating public art projects to the Fort Point Channel and Harborwalk in 2021. These public art projects will continue to increase the visibility of Fort Point as a cultural destination.

Boston Rowing Center Adult Rowing and Lunchtime Livery Program

Applicant: Hull Lifesaving Museum
Award: $12,000

The Hull Lifesaving Museum will use this grant to continue bringing participants to their Boston Rowing Center in Fort Point Channel for fitness, exploration and community, beginning with the annual Fort Point Open Rowing Race and continuing through the year with weekly adult rowing outings. New this year, the Hull Lifesaving Museum has begun a series of workshops for adult rowing members to learn more about boating safety, navigation, and Boston’s maritime heritage.

Brown Box Theatre Project 2020-2021 Season: Much Ado About Nothing

Applicant: Brown Box Theatre Project
Award: $13,000

As part of the Brown Box Theatre Project’s tenth season of free theater on the Fort Point Channel, the organization will present Much Ado About Nothing for their annual Shakespeare offering. The grant will also help fund two additional productions as part of the 2021 season, which have yet to be determined.

Discovering Fort Point Channel

Applicant: “e”, Inc.
Award: $9,692

For the past six summers, “e” inc., a planet science learning and action center, has used this grant funding to provide free daily field trips to Fort Point Channel for youth from various urban summer camps and social service centers to enjoy hands-on science lessons on the Fort Point Channel in July and August.

Now in its ninth year, the program provides financial resources for capital improvements and public programming within and along the Fort Point Channel, as envisioned in the Fort Point Channel Watersheet Activation Plan. The plan was established in 2002 through a collaborative effort between the BPDA, City of Boston, landowners, nonprofit and cultural leaders, and residents to encourage new cultural activities and year-round programming in Fort Point.

Fort Point Channel Watersheet Activation Plan

Approximately $50,000 is available to organizations for the 2020 grant cycle. The competitive grant seeks creative proposals for water-based programming in and around Fort Point that will benefit the general public, including such things as new water-based infrastructure, public events, art installations, and educational opportunities.

To be eligible, an organization must be tax-exempt or operate under the fiscal sponsorship of a tax-exempt nonprofit. For-profit organizations may be eligible for funding at the discretion of the Fort Point Channel Operations Board if the project constitutes a not-for-profit, public project.

Applications are due on Monday, March 9, 2020 at 5 p.m. Funding for the grants stems from the Chapter 91 Waterways Regulations License for Atlantic Wharf, a project developed by Boston Properties.

At Monday night's BPDA Community Meeting for 15 Necco Street over 150 Fort Point neighbors turned out to have their voices heard and their message was clear. 

The Boston Globe took notice. The City staff was surprised. The development team was shocked.

Make sure your voice is heard. 

Submit a letter to the BPDA and our elected officials.  
Our personal comments are the most effective way to make change happen.

We only have one chance to get this right.

• Overall architectural design & fit within the neighborhood, especially with respect to existing historic architecture (see meeting presentation page 6)
• Retaining State (Chapter 91) approved cultural and civic community ground floor spaces- a community work lounge, a restaurant cafe, museum and collaboration space.
