About The Neighborhood: Farmers Markets, Family Fun, Ice Cream, Art & Music

Feels like summer with the return of farmers markets, an ice cream festival and a Caribbean American Heritage Celebration (new!)Sprinkled in are a updates on Article 80 modernization, Landmark Commissioner appointees, a flood resiliency conference, zoning code hearing on residential development parking minimums and an art opening! On Saturday, there are choices galore with the Fish & Farm Market, Southie Family Funday,  FPAC Instrument Petting Zoo and opening day at the Lawn on D. 

June 1: South Boston Farmers Market opens today and every Monday through November from 11am to 5pm at 446 W. Broadway, adjacent to the municipal parking lot. 

June 2: Boston Civic Design Commission Monthly Meeting | Bostonplans.org at 5pm. On the agenda: Planning Department presentations on Article 80 Modernization Updates by Kevin Crossley, Sr. Programmer plus Commissioner Training procedural updates and a discussion of proposed by-laws. 

June 2 - 4, Jimmy Fund Scooper Bowl takes place at 88 Seaport Blvd from 12pm to 8pm. Use code SOUTHIE for $3 off each ticket! Taste over 40 flavors from your favorite national and local ice cream brands and enjoy live music. On June 4th is the, Scoop & Sip Beer Garden from 5pm to 8pm. Tickets are $40 and available on site only.


June 3:  Flood Resiliency Conference, from planning to action -innovative funding options, governance and project management to address coastal and riverine flooding, from 8:30am – 12:30pm at the Fort Point room at 290 Congress St. This free conference is sponsored by Save the Harbor Save the Bay,


June 4: City Council Committee on Planning, Development, and Transportation Hearing on Docket #0809, an Order for a Text Amendment to the Boston Zoning Code to largely eliminate parking minimums for residential development, at 10am.


June 4: Opening reception of Continuous Signal from 5:30pm to 7:30pm at the Gallery at 249 A. Artist John Dykes exhibits 20 new abstract paintings exploring layered structure, gestural movement, and translucent fields that evolve into shifting visual networks. The works examine perception, memory, and the unstable nature of systems and language. Show runs runs through June 28th. The Gallery at 249 A is located within the 249 A Street Artists Cooperative.

June 5: City Council Committee on Planning, Development, and Transportation Hearing on Dockets #0796-0800 | Boston.gov, a hearing regarding various appointments, including an appointee to the Boston Landmarks Commission and the Fort Point Channel Landmark Commission. The hearing takes place at 10am via zoom. Contact Shane Pac for the zoom link if you wish to comment/testify or watch live at boston.gov/city-council-tv.

June 5: Celebrate National Caribbean American Heritage Month at the Maritime Park (600 D St) in the Seaport from 5pm to 10pm. Enjoy live music, Caribbean Cuisine, cultural performances and the spirit of the Caribbean. (new!)

June 6: Fish & Farm Market returns for a third year to Boston's Fish Pier every Saturday through October 31st from 9am to 1pm. New this year is live music and craft and art vendors. Buy fresh fish, fresh vegetables and specialty food for your table.

June 6: 15th Annual Southie Family Fun Day hosted by South Boston MOMS Club will take place from 11am to 4pm at the DCR Marine Park, corner of E Broadway & Farragut Rd. Join local families, businesses, nonprofits, and organizations for a full day of entertainment, activities, and community celebration. Guests will enjoy children’s games and activities, live entertainment, food vendors, giveaways, and more throughout the day.

June 6: FPAC Instrument Petting Zoo is back at the Seaport Summer Market (88 Seaport Boulevard) from 1pm to 3pm. Hang out with local musicians, learn about various instruments and maybe find out if you have a secret talent. Saturdays: June 6th, June 13th, June 20th, and June 27th.

June 6: Lawn on D Opening Day kicks off with Harpoon’s annual summer event, Boston Chilling Low Key Music Fest, a one-day outdoor concert experience designed for anyone who enjoys easygoing vibes, live music, and a cold beverage. The free event runs from 1:00 PM to 8:00 PM, with musical performances kicking off at 3:00 PM.

Happenings About The Neighborhood This Week: Gillette, Article 80, Fish & Farm & Family Fun Day

6/3: Boston Civic Design Commission Monthly Meeting at 5pm. Agenda includes the Gillette Redevelopment Master Plan PDA, referred for initial review and recommendation by the Planning Department Review Committee.

6/4: 15 Necco's Floating Wetland and Watersheet Activation Community Gathering from 6pm to 8pm at the Community Work Lounge. The wetland is part of 15 Necco’s commitment to provide meaningful public benefits to the Fort Point neighborhood and watersheet.  Come give your feedback around the types of events and programs that could center around this newly proposed attraction to the Fort Point Channel. View Presentation.


6/5: Article 80 Modernization: Improving Development Review | Public Meeting at 6pm Learn the latest on the Article 80 Modernization project, early actions to improve the Article 80 process and draft zoning amendments to correct outdated language & introduce changes to the Boston Civic Design Commission procedures. Comment deadline June 15th. 

6/6: Improving Development Review | Office Hour at 12pm.  Staff will be available to answer questions, go through project material, or discuss future engagement opportunities. There will also be an Office Hour on June 10 at 5pm. 

6/7: Fish and Farm Market Opening Day from 9:30 am to 1:30pm at Boston's Fish Pier (Seaport Blvd & D St.) featuring fresh food and specialty items from local farms and local fisherman. Free 30 minute parking for market customers. The seasonal market will run every Saturday. 

6/7: 14th Annual Southie Family Fun Day returns courtesy of the MOMS Club of South Boston from 12pm to 5pm at DCR Marine Park (corner of E Broadway & Farragut). Free activities, performances, snacks and surprises. The Southie Family Fun Day will be held rain or shine.

May 31: Comment deadline on the Cannabis Zoning Amendment to remove 1/2 mile buffer between establishments. The intent of the existing buffer zone is to prevent cannabis establishments from opening in clusters to ensure that no particular neighborhood would become the center for cannabis shops, and to ensure that dispensaries are spread out in the city, while allowing access to patients and customers. View amendment and public meeting. June 6: Life Science Public Safety In Person Public Meeting at 6pm at 105 W 1st St. This  is a public meeting in partnership with the Boston Public Health Commission (BPHC), Boston Fire Department, and Boston Emergency Medical Services to discuss the public safety protocols and regulatory responsibilities currently in place for the Boston Life Sciences industry.

Southie Family Fun Day & City Hall To Go

Southie Family Fun Day June 7, 2014 11-4

The MOMS Club of South Boston proudly presents Southie Family Fun Day, which will take place on Saturday, June 7, 2014 from 11 am to 4 pm at Marine Park (Farragut Road) in South Boston.  From puppet shows to self defense to irish dance performances, there are fun games and activities for the entire family!  The MOMS Club of South Boston is passionate about making South Boston a community where children and families feel free to play, engage in their community, and connect with each other


City Hall To Go
While enjoying the day with you family, City Hall To Go makes it easy to combine play and pay a parking ticket, renew or apply for residential parking permit, file for a copy of your marriage license,  get a recycling sticker and more....City Hall To Go will be next in South Boston on Tuesday, June 17th from 4pm -7pm at 460 West Broadway.
