URBAN EDGE: Change, Death + Superstition - Opening Reception January 20th

The Gallery at 249 A Street to premier Urban Edge, a new exhibit of works by Steve Kromer and Duane Lucia.  The opening reception takes place on:

Saturday, January 20, 2024
3pm-6pm
249 A Street
Free & Open to the public
Click here for tickets to reception

The exhibit runs from Wednesday, January 10 through Saturday, February 24, 2024. Gallery hours are by appointment only at (617) 416-0718.

Urban Edge is a collection of paintings, mixed media sculptures and photographs of graffiti through which the two artists conjure up thoughts and feelings about vandalism, superstition, street beat, death, surrealism, and neighborhood resistance to change. Kromer’s photographs portray the beauty, vulgarity and rawness not concerned with the comfort zone of others; roadside attractions which don’t need to be intellectualized. Lucia’s paintings and totem sculptures tell of a 45-year journey; a degenerated photo booth selfie, an assemblage of discarded objects, furniture found in the trash, cans, drift wood from the Fort Point Channel and more.

Steve Kromer is a member of the 249 A St. Cooperative. His work “Party of Three” was presented at the 40th anniversary group exhibition at Atlantic Wharf Gallery this past spring. He is a singer, songwriter and harmonica player.

Duane Lucia is a Boston artist, curator and documentary filmmaker working in Fort Point. He is the co-founder of Gallery East, which since 1979 has been a platform for Boston’s avant-garde.

The Gallery at 249 A Street is supported in part by a grant from the South Boston Community Development Foundation.

Gallery At 249A Opens Rule of Thirds This Saturday

The Gallery at 249 is hosting the opening reception of Rule of Thirds: An Experiment in Sequential Collaboration by Rocco Giuliano and Sylvia Stagg-Giuliano on:

Saturday August 14, 2021
5 - 7pm
249 A Street

The experiment: Visual artist and photographer Sylvia presents husband Rocco, a writer, with dozens of gritty urban street photos and asks him to write an haiku inspired by each one. This seems to Rocco like a bizarre idea, as an haiku is not usually associated with, say, a photo of Hoboken motorcycle cops. In fact, it seems downright perverse to force two radically different forms of expression to share a single sheet of photographic paper.

But, having learned that resistance is futile, Rocco goes along with this experiment in sequential collaboration. It is our hope that the viewer, whom we presume to be a seeker of coherence if not truth, will, in conjuring meaning from the juxtaposition of image and verse, join our experiment as a third collaborator.

The show runs through September 3rd. Private viewings may be arranged upon request. To visit the gallery by appointment: contact Sylvia Stagg-Giuliano via email or by calling 781-395-4036.

A Real Reception At The Gallery At 249 A This Saturday

The Gallery at 249 A proudly presents "Family Ties" for its first 2021 in-person art opening on:

Saturday, June 19, 2021
5 pm to 7pm
Gallery At 249 A
249 A Street

"Family Ties" is an exhibition by curator and artist Bebe Beard, her husband and fellow artist, Dan Osterman and their niece, artist Vanessa Varjian. Vanessa Varjian and Dan Osterman are painters inspired by the observation of the outdoors. While keen observers, both enjoy pushing paint on board or paper into more poetic realms. Bebe Beard’s work takes on a fantasy of organic shapes that celebrate or seem held down by man’s refuse.

As we move beyond the pandemic, Bebe hopes that the natural world will inspire you to visit. "Family Ties" runs from June 15 through July 25th. Viewing by appointment. Text 617-416-7827 to schedule your gallery visit.
