Veteran South Boston state Rep. Brian Wallace is stepping away from the Golden Dome to focus on his family and pursue a writing career.

“On December 31, 2010, I will walk out of my office . . . just down the corridor from where I walked in 40 years ago, for the final time. It has been a great experience,” said Wallace, who worked at the State House before becoming a lawmaker in 2003.

Deciphering the Divine
artist statement

My work is a visual account of my everyday experiences – a narration of the mundane and sublime in each day and how these seemingly varied experiences exhibit nature's transformative, restorative and live-giving forces.

The work in this show draws from two recent bodies of work, both using the human mind as a centerpiece and references neuroscience, meditation and the remapping of brain circuitry. While the subject of this show draws directly from my cognitive life, the abstract imagery references fragments of indecipherable characters and letters, as well as the natural world of aquatic organisms.

As I work, I try to tap into a state of flow and decipher something not immediately known. A secret alphabet may appear from the swoosh of a gesture line, or the shape of a human heart might be suggested by a crevice in a sea sponge.

All of the mediums exhibited in this show (watery inks pooled on paper or film, thinned oils, and human hair on paper) are difficult to control. This allows the mediums to come to life and exhibit their own natural properties, diminishing my power over the outcome. Working in this manner is like redefining how one interprets the world through cognitive remapping practices, such as meditation. The immediacy of finding a solution, or controlling the situation, seems to fade away and the richness of the details takes hold of the mind.

Summer St. Installation in Tufts Daily

Lisa Greenfield and Daniel J. van Ackere's installation "Starry Night" is featured in the Tufts Daily:

‘Starry Night’ installation brightens dull season, dingy street
Van Gogh has got nothing on Fort Point’s public art

By Jessica Bal

Cars are parked along the slushy sides of Summer Street, surrounding an overpass with graffiti bordering its edges. As darkness envelops this corner of Boston, partially hiding the grime of the metal support system and the broken glass scattered on the sidewalk, the streetlights flicker on. So does another set of lights — 4,800 of them.

Strings of blue LED bulbs blanket the underside of the overpass in an installation piece by Lisa Greenfield and Daniel van Ackere titled “Starry Night.” The project is part of the first−ever Fort Point Arts Community’s Winter Solstice Public Art Series, meant to brighten what is often the dullest season in New England.

“I walk by this area every day,” said Greenfield, who has a painting studio at the artist co−op building at 300 Summer St. “I was thinking, ‘What could I do to make this place a little brighter?’” Greenfield, who graduated from Brandeis University with a degree in studio art, has lived in the Fort Point community for about 15 years, and has created a number of installation pieces in the area — from “House of Cards” in the Fort Point Channel to a collection of Slinkys on the same Summer Street overpass.

Snow Emergency Declard

February 9, 2010

Mayor Thomas M. Menino today declared that a snow emergency and parking ban will go into effect at 8:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 10, 2010. Mayor Menino would like to remind residents of the following:
  • The City of Boston encourages businesses to ask employees to work from home when possible, take public transportation, and be prepared for a potentially dangerous evening commute. Everyone is encouraged to use public transportation.
  • City of Boston afternoon and evening activities are subject to cancellation.
  • Move cars from main arterials during snow emergencies. A listing of main arterials can be found at www.cityofboston.gov/snow/parking/
  • Do not park cars within 20 feet of an intersection. Parking too close to an intersection can restrict emergency vehicle access.
  • Do not throw snow back into the street. "Throwbacks" force the city to remove snow from the same street twice.
  • Shovel out fire hydrants and storm drains close to your home.
  • Property owners are reminded to shovel snow from sidewalks that abut homes and businesses.
  • Do not double park.
  • Keep wheelchair ramps clear.
  • Lend an extra hand to elderly and neighbors and others in need.
During declared snow emergencies, discounted parking is available at several parking lots and garages to cars that display Boston resident parking stickers. A list of locations is available at www.cityofboston.gov/snow. The city's Know Snow program will be in effect this afternoon to alert residents of the snow emergency.

The City of Boston Storm Center will open at 8:00 a.m. Wednesday, when the snow emergency goes into effect. Residents with storm-related questions or concerns should call the center at 617-635-3050, starting at 8:00 a.m. Wednesday
