FPNA Neighborhood Monthly Meeting Series Continues February 25th

The Fort Point Neighborhood Association continues their monthly neighborhood meeting series on Tuesday, February 25, 2014.  This month’s special guest is State Representative Nick Collins.  The meeting will begin with an open discussion on neighborhood issues, updates on Fort Point branding by Danielle Pillion, Executive Director, Friends of Fort Point Channel; and on BCEC gate show parking and transportation by Bob O’Shea, Community Liaison, Boston Convention and Exhibition Center. Representative Collins will speak at 7 pm to be followed by a question and answer period. If that is not enough, Harpoon will be offering samples along with an exclusive invitation to Fort Point neighbors. Come join your neighbors!

New England Boat Show Traffic Plan

From February 22nd - March 2nd, 2014, the New England Boat Show will be at the Boston Exhibit & Convention Center

Boat show overflow parking will most likely be needed over this weekend and next weekend. If the Boston Marine Industrial Park garage fills, the Necco Street garage will be used.

Midway Fund Surpasses Initial $1m Funding Goal

Congratulations to the Midway Fund on raising $1.1 million in the first two weeks!

We have exceeded our initial fundraising goal of $1 million dollars due on February 5th: Within 14 business days we raised $1.1 million. Many people thought this was not possible - it was.

To close the sale we must raise an additional $1.1 million in investments by April 1.

The sale of Midway Studios threatens to destabilize the arts community that has developed in Fort Point if this live/work space is purchased by a developer who does not have a commitment to the arts. To secure the artistic accessibility and integrity of this important building, the Midway resident artists partnered with New Atlantic Development, a Boston real estate developer with a significant track record in arts-related projects, to present a successful bid to purchase Midway Studios and form a non-profit corporation, Midway Artist Collective, Inc, to own and operate the building. If we are successful, this will bring genuine ownership investment to the residents.

Snow Emergency and Parking Ban to Be Lifted at 5:00PM Tonight

Mayor Martin J. Walsh today announced the snow emergency and parking ban for the city of Boston will be lifted at 5:00 p.m. tonight, Wednesday, February 5. Mayor Walsh continues to monitor the City’s response efforts and will receive updates from his team throughout the evening.

“It was important that parking be available on our main arteries tonight for our businesses and restaurants,” Mayor Walsh said. “Our crews are still out there working hard, widening the streets and targeting intersections. We’re focused on getting the city cleaned up in advance of the expected cold temperatures and any snow that comes our way this weekend.”

Public Works crews are focusing tonight on widening roadways, snow removal at major intersections, and have dispatched smaller equipment to clear side and dead end streets. More than 500 pieces of equipment remain active on city roads. Enforcement officers will be monitoring "throw backs" of snow into plowed streets, requiring additional plowing and resulting in refreeze.

During declared snow emergencies, discounted parking is available at several parking lots and garages to cars that display Boston resident parking stickers. Drivers have two hours after a ban is lifted to maintain the reduced rate. Discounted parking will be available until 7:00 p.m. tonight: http://www.cityofboston.gov/snow/parkingmap.asp.

Boston Centers for Youth & Families community centers had received more than 500 visits as of 3:00 p.m. this afternoon.

Mayor Walsh also reminds residents of the following:

• Carbon Monoxide is an odorless and tasteless gas that results from combustion and can quickly become fatal. Residents should clear snow and debris away from mufflers before starting the car and ensure that external vents are cleared of snow. If you are using a generator, make sure it is far enough away to vent air and gases away from the home. A safety video about carbon monoxide poisoning prevention is available here.
• The City's homeless shelters have activated emergency procedures. The City's Shelter Commission asks that any resident who sees a potential medical emergency involving a homeless person dial 9-1-1.
• Property owners are required to salt and sand sidewalks, stairs and pedestrian ramps to prevent slippery surfaces.
• Residents are encouraged to shovel out hydrants and catch basins near or abutting their property to assist our public safety agencies and protect against flooding.
• Please check on elderly or vulnerable neighbors who may need help.
• Use caution when walking near buildings that may have falling snow or ice.
• Shoveling snow can pose a serious health safety risk to persons with heart disease and senior citizens. Residents should consider seeking the assistance of a family member, a helpful neighbor or hire someone to help.

The Mayor's 24-Hour Hotline has received 2,100 calls since midnight. Additional staff are on-hand and residents with weather-related questions or concerns, including down power lines, down trees or icy conditions, should call (617) 635-4500.

Residents are encouraged to use the City’s “Know Snow” program for access to other important storm-related information. Details on Snow Emergency

To the Residents of South Boston:

 

A Winter Storm Warning has been issued throughout Massachusetts.  The City of Boston has also declared a Snow Emergency and Parking Ban that will go into effect at noon today.  Due to the Snow Emergency, parking is prohibited on all major roadways and arteries throughout Boston.  The purpose of the ban is to keep major roadways accessible for snowplows and emergency response vehicles.  Those found violating the ban will be subject to ticketing and towing.  As an alternative, parking garages will be made available for cars with resident stickers. 

 

In South Boston, the following roads are subject to the Parking Ban:

 

A St.

B St. (from West First St. to West Second St.)

Boston St.

Broadway (from Albany to Dorchester Ave.)

C St. (from West Broadway to West First St.)

Congress St.

D St.

Dorchester Ave.

Dorchester St.

East Broadway

East First St.

L St.

Northern Ave.

Old Colony Ave. (from Dorchester Ave. to Preble St.)

Old Colony Blvd.

Preble St.

Seaport Blvd. (from Atlantic Ave. to B St.)

Shore Drive

Southhampton St.

Summer Street

West Broadway

West First St. (from B St. to East First St.)

Additionally, the Department of Conservation and Recreation closed Morrissey Boulevard earlier this morning and it will remain closed until further notice.

 

While parking on these roads is prohibited until the ban is lifted, those with resident stickers can park at the following garages:

450 West Broadway 60 spaces

650-652 East Broadway 22 spaces

415 Summer St. (BCEC South Lot) 1300 spaces
