John was elected to the Boston City Council in 2007 and currently chairs the Council’s Education Committee, the Environment and Health Committee and the Special Committee on a Livable Boston

In the 2009 election, Mayor Menino won his fifth consecutive term, defeating Michael Flaherty in the closest race since Menino was first elected in 1993.
