South Station Expansion

Reminder: Comment Deadline on the South Station Expansion Environmental Impact is December 24, 2014.

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (massDot) will be holding a hearing regarding the preliminary environmental benefits and impacts of the South Station Expansion project on:

Tuesday, November 18, 2014
6pm (Open House at 5:30pm)
Boston Children’s Museum
Dewey Conference Room, 5th floor
308 Congress Street, Boston, MA
(please use this entrance, not the main museum entrance)

The Draft Environmental Impact Report (DEIR) summarizes the project’s environmental benefits and impacts. MassDOT, the MBTA, the Federal Railroad Administration, and Amtrak have identified the expansion of rail capacity at South Station as a critical regional and national transportation need. The purpose of the South Station Expansion project is to expand the station’s terminal and related layover capacity to meet current and future high-speed, intercity, and commuter rail service needs. The latest project fact sheet summarizes the main conclusions of the DEIR.

South Boston Waterfront Transportation Recommendations Meeting

Will A Street be widened to four lanes? Will Thomson Place and Sleeper Street connect Seaport Boulevard to Congress Street? Will the By-pass Road and Dorchester Avenue open to the public? Will there be more public transportation? Find out the draft recommendations to these questions and more at the final community feedback meeting of the South Boston Waterfront Transportation Sustainability Plan to be held:

Thursday, December 18
6:00-8:00 PM
Boston Convention & Exhibition Center – Room 153
415 Summer Street, Boston

The first December meeting presentation, a duplicate to the upcoming December 18th meeting, has been posted as requested to give the neighborhood the opportunity to study it more thoroughly and to prepare those attending the December 18th. We recommend you review the presentation before attending to avoid being overwhelmed by information. The project team will present the draft recommendations of the plan and listen to your feedback. Community feedback is essential to plan for the best improvements possible. You may also share your comments through the  South Boston Waterfront Mobility website and by contacting Rachel Hammerman

In case you missed the September and October community meetings, catch up with summary results highlighting the top three priorities (or four in case of a tie) for each question. The results from the Condon School October meeting are listed in blue and appear above the results from the September District Hall meeting. In addition, future land use is documented in the Future Conditions Report. The development projections predict job and population growth. The projected growth is then used to model demand for transportation infrastructure and services over the next 20 years.
