Monday, April 30th at 6:30pm at the Tynan School Auditorium (650 East Fourth Street).

We hope all will attend this very important community meeting.  Be informed.  Get involved.  There have been several serious incidents on Gold Street and other areas near the corner of A Street and West Broadway as well as the one you may have heard about in the news.

Social Wines is open!

Owners Chris and John (and pup Tanqueray) opened for business on Saturday.  The shop carries a selection of spirits, wine, and beer, with a special interest in local and craft labels. They are still filling in their inventory, so let them know if you have favorites that you'd like to be able to find right in the neighborhood.

The shop is located at the corner of A Street and Broadway.  You can visit them online at their Facebook page.

Thanks to Cam, Charles, and all of the volunteers and local businesses that helped out.  The neighborhood looks great!

Boston Shines This Saturday

Always a fun event. Thanks to Cam for organizing again. She does a great job every year.

Boston Shines
Sat., 4/28
Starting at 10AM
Meet in Wormwood Park

---
Dear Neighbors,

We have our best "Shines" yet planned. It's an enjoyable way to meet your neighbors and do a little urban gardening. The neighborhood cleanup and planting is on Saturday, April 28th. There is a Friday planting event for local businesses and those who can't make the Saturday cleanup. If you would like to come on Friday, let me know so we can plan food and drinks.  Here's the link to "Shines" on our website: http://fortpointneighborhood.org/current-projects/boston-shines/

This year we are doing an expanded vines and tree project-(with lots of interesting blooming vines and flowers) with options for local companies to adopt tree circles and vines panels. Jennifer Amadeo Holl has done a great job working with Southie trees, who have donated $200. for much-needed mulch.  Charles Joesph and neighborhood angel Danielle Pillion have spent a lot of time helping to organize the event this year and I extend my heartfelt thanks to them both.

Our killer party will be at Wormwood Park and set up is at 4:30. Food and refreshing beverages will be donated by local restaurants and shops as usual. We are meeting in Wormwood Park (not Binford) at 10 AM. Sagarino's has offered a free drink (coffee or a cold drink) and a muffin. Just say you are doing Shines. Do NOT ask for the free items unless you are :-) Maybe we'll have a secret hand signal. Barington's is also providing coffee for those on the other side of the neighborhood.

A Street will be unrecognizable on Monday! (Seriously).
Best,
Cam Sawzin

P.S. there is a smart phone app called citizens connect which is an extremely effective way to snap a picture of an issue-trash, etc and report it to the city. I tried it on the A Street fence and two days later it was cleaned.

Sat., Bob Raymond Memorial Exhibition at Midway

MEMORIAL GATHERING AND EXHIBITION OPENING
IN HONOR OF BOB RAYMOND

at Studio Soto
10 Channel Center St., Boston

2 - 5pm: memorial gathering
5 - 7pm: opening reception for
"this moment: missives from another world and other works"
of Bob Raymond

The Mobius Artists Group invites our friends, supporters, and the Boston and international arts communities to a memorial gathering and exhibition opening in honor of the late Bob Raymond, who passed away in late February of this year.

The memorial gathering will be from 2-5 pm with homemade food and refreshments, acknowledging Bob's belief that sharing food in this way brought people together.  Family members and colleagues will speak about Bob, and we invite others to also share their memories of him.  At 5 pm, the event will segue with music performed by the Mobius Quartet (James Coleman, Derek Hoffend, Tom Plsek, Jed Speare) into the opening of the exhibition of some of Bob Raymond's photographs entitled; "this moment: missives from another world and other works."
These events will take place at Studio Soto, located in the Fort Point area of Boston at 10 Channel Center Street.

Bob Raymond was a photographer and intermedia artist who was a central part of the Mobius Artists Group and Mobius' evolution for nearly thirty years. Before his involvement with Mobius, he was Assistant Director of Boston Film and Video Foundation, an important resource and venue for film and video makers and time-based artists. At Mobius, he was known as the one who photographed thousands of artists who presented work at Mobius, as well as at other sites and venues involving Mobius Artists Group works. If you have been to Mobius or a Mobius-sponsored event in the past 30 years, you probably saw Bob seated in the front row, quietly capturing moments in performance that he was so instinctively and craftily skilled at and prepared for.

Opening at Studio Soto on the 21st at 5pm will be an exhibition, "this moment: missives from another world and other works," by Bob Raymond. The exhibition includes the images from the exhibition by that name from 2009, as well as additional prints made in the past year; images from Mobius' 1996 Macedonia exchange project, "Liquor Amnii," as well as photographs of some of his surviving partner and Mobius' founder, Marilyn Arsem's work.

This moment: missives from another world was originally exhibited at Studio Soto in the summer of 2009. Those photos are drawn from the over 15,000 35 millimeter slides and 10, 000 digital images he created as part of the Mobius archive. It was at that time that Bob Raymond began to work with and print some of his favorite images in a larger format. While their origin is in performance documentation, their outcome is the result of Raymond's insight into the work and his unyielding attention towards it.  In March 2011, he added additional prints to this body of work when he exhibited them in New York at the Fountain Art Fair. More recently, the newest prints were shown at Boston University as part of the performance art exhibition, 100 Years in January 2012.

Bob Raymond's work is a large part of a vast legacy and record of Mobius' leading role in Boston's experimental arts scene of the past thirty-five years. It will continue to grow in recognition and importance as it gains exposure. Exhibitions as well as the forthcoming transfer of Mobius' archive, that features the tens of thousands of Raymond's images, to
Tufts University will ensure its preservation and future access. For now, join Mobius in honoring our beloved friend and colleague and view a portion of his voluminous, extraordinary work.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory can be made to Mobius, Inc.,
55 Norfolk Street, Cambridge, MA 02139.

BRA Blocks Residential Project on Congress St.

Developer Madison Properties has a residential project lined up and ready-go-to and the BRA has blocked it to save the site for a hotel.  The BRA is also working on using subsidies to make a hotel economically viable at that site.

from the Globe:
--

In two weeks, Boston officials will converge on a South Boston parking lot. They will clutch shiny commemorative shovels and hurl superlatives at the Cambridge Innovation Center, a technology incubator that will be breaking ground on a Boston outpost. They will name-check Vertex, the pharmaceutical giant now building a new headquarters across the street at Fan Pier, as well as the nearby convention center, and the scores of technology firms that are filling the old brick warehouses nearby.

But it’s almost assured that, when all ceremonial sand-tossing has concluded, no one from City Hall will have mentioned the nearby “Sausage Parcel.” That isn’t the type of story the city likes to tell — especially when it’s trying to drum up business along the waterfront...

A year ago, Madison went to the city with a plan to build a smaller 400-unit apartment tower instead, and the financing to do it. The city rebuffed that bid and has barely acknowledged a subsequent effort. Officials inside the Boston Redevelopment Authority are demanding a hotel, and they’re prepared to wait. “It’s a critical site, and it absolutely should be a hotel site,” says Kairos Shen, the BRA’s chief planner...

...the convention center has said no developer can afford to build in the neighborhood, so it’s talking about throwing a $200 million subsidy at a proposed 1,000-room hotel nearby, and also subsidizing moderately priced hotels.
 ..

Dennis Dowdle, the principal at Madison Properties, said in a statement that he “wants to be part of the city’s Innovation District and will continue to work with the BRA to make that happen.” What’s uncertain is whether the BRA will ever reciprocate.
